Claude Code /chrome: Hand Your Chrome Browser to the AI

"You let an AI drive the browser itself?" It sounds strange at first, but it's surprisingly handy for checking whether a website renders correctly or for handing off repetitive tasks. The command that connects Claude Code to Chrome is /chrome.

Definition (what it is)

/chrome is a command that sets up the integration so Claude can operate the Chrome browser. Once the integration (connecting the two so they work together) is done, Claude can open web pages, click buttons, and check the screen.

With this turned on, you can hand web automation (running browser tasks you used to do by hand automatically) or website testing over to Claude.

How to use it (by difficulty)

Basic — open the integration setup

/chrome

Typing this starts the Chrome integration setup. Just follow the on-screen guidance. Usually there's a step to install a Chrome extension (a small add-on that gives the browser extra features) that helps with the connection, or to grant permissions.

Once setup is complete, from then on you can give browser instructions with phrases like "open this site and click the login button."

Common pitfalls

  • Chrome must already be installed on your computer. The integration links your existing Chrome to Claude, so if Chrome itself isn't there, the setup won't proceed.
  • A permission prompt may appear during setup. These are permissions needed to operate the browser on your behalf, so read the guidance and allow them.
  • The setup has several steps at first and can feel daunting, but just follow them one at a time in the order shown on screen.

Real-world example

Instead of clicking through everything by hand to check whether the website you built works as intended, you can keep the /chrome integration on and hand the testing to Claude, like "go into the main screen, type text into the search box, and see if results come up."

Taking it further

Being able to operate the browser also means you can have it do web automation. You can hand off repetitive web tasks (like going through several pages to check information) to Claude and save yourself the manual work.

Summary

/chrome is a command that sets up the integration so Claude can operate the Chrome browser. Once connected, you can hand website testing or web automation over to Claude.
