claude auth login: Log In with Your Anthropic Account Anywhere

Launched claude and got asked to log in? A single claude auth login does it. From a new laptop to console-billing login, organized at a beginner's level.

When you first install Claude Code and type claude, have you ever had a "please log in" message pop up before any work happens? No need to panic. Logging in is done with a single command, and you usually only have to do it once, after which you can use it right away.

Definition (What It Is)

claude auth login is a command for logging in with your Anthropic account (auth = authentication). To use Claude Code, you have to verify "who you are" once, and this command handles that verification process. Once you log in, that info is saved, so you don't need to type it again afterward.

How to Use It (By Difficulty)

Before you start: This command works the same no matter which folder you type it in. There's no need to move into a work folder—just open the terminal and type it. During the login process, a web browser usually opens automatically (or you paste the address shown on screen into a browser yourself). When you log in with your account there, it returns to the terminal and completes automatically.

Basic — Account login

When you run it, the login process begins. When the browser opens, log in with your Anthropic account and follow the on-screen guidance. When it finishes, a login-complete message appears in the terminal, and now you can start working with claude.

Applied — Log in for console (API billing)

claude auth login --console

Appending --console logs you in with a method that settles API usage fees separately through the console (Anthropic's management page for developers) (API = the way a program calls Claude, billed by usage). If you use a regular subscription, just use claude auth login without this option.

Real-World Example

When you get a new laptop and install Claude Code for the first time, the typical flow is to first log in with claude auth login and then start working. Logging in first lets the subsequent claude commands work smoothly without login prompts.

More Ways to Use It

  • Since you can log in per environment, you can keep your work account and home account separate.
  • When moving to a new device, just run claude auth login once more on that device.
  • There are also related commands (claude auth status, claude auth logout) for when you're curious about your login status or want to log out.

Wrap-Up

claude auth login is the "entry check" step for using Claude Code. Even if a "please log in" message appears, this single line resolves it. It's a good command to think of first when starting on a new device.
